Belphegor - Pestapokalypse VI
Label: Nuclear Blast
Year: 2006
The official soundtrack of HELL is now available through Nuclear Blast
records!
The sixth unholy release from BELPHEGOR (vocalist Helmuth and guitarist
Sigurd, rounded out by session musician Nefastus (drums), entitled
Pestapokalypse VI, is sure to strike fear in the hearts of the masses.
With the songs focusing on such topics as the devil, pestilence,
and the apocalypse, this disc is pure diabolical darkness delivered
at maximum impact…old school black metal with an icy, heartless
chill.
The standout track on Pestapokalypse is track number 2, Seyn Todt
in Schwartz, with it’s great trilling guitar part throughout.
It’s the type of composition that you don’t often hear
and an example of why BELPHEGOR are still around after six albums
– strong songwriting. Angel Of Retribution is a little slower
than the first two songs, which adds a nice, evil dimension to the
album, and the fire sounds at the end of the song are positively
haunting. Bluhtsturm Erotika, first single / video, a dramatic song
with very cool vocal harmonies, giving it a ‘chant’
effect. The ending spoken part in the song is an effective, spooky
touch, as is the chilling ending to Sanctus Perversum with the slow
chanting of Sanctus…Sanctus….Sanctus”….brrrr…
Pestapokalypse is an eerie, atmospheric journey through the depths
of Hell, with Helmuth and Sigurd gladly acting as our sinister tour
guides. Both men are very talented musicians and perform at the
top of their game all throughout this disc. Andy Classen’s
production is effective, with the dry, cold drums, and very thick,
at times almost gurgling, vocals. The bass is a little low in the
mix, but, that’s a small issue as the album is really about
Sigurd, Helmuth, and the atmosphere they have created.
This is a cold, eerie, and very cool album. If you like your metal
without compromise, then Pestapokalypse VI, and BELPHEGOR, are a
must for your collection.
